Health & Safety on Historic London Buildings – Why Method Statements Matter

October 4, 2025by admin0

At Safety Inspectors UK, we’re often called in to support projects that carry a mix of complexity and heritage. One recent job in Central London was a perfect example.

Our role was to support the principal contractor by reviewing and developing the method statement and risk assessments for work on a Victorian red-brick building with multiple chimney stacks. While the structure itself is stunning, it presents unique challenges — working at height, fragile surfaces, confined access, and the risks of operating around an older building fabric.

Historic buildings remind us of just how far safety has come. When these structures were first built, there were no safety standards, no scaffolding codes, no fall-arrest harnesses. Sadly, lives were often lost to create the very architecture we admire today.

That’s why modern RAMS and method statements matter so much. They’re not “just compliance.” They are the framework that ensures every worker is protected while carrying out high-risk work. In this case, careful planning meant:

  • Proper scaffold design and fall protection at height

  • Defined access and egress routes

  • Fire prevention and material storage planning

  • Emergency procedures adapted for the site’s constraints

Whether in Central London or further afield in the North East, our consultancy ensures that businesses can meet their obligations while keeping workers safe. Because safety isn’t red tape — it’s respect for those on site today, and for the lessons hard-earned in the past.
