A safer lift starts with how the job is planned.

At Dinsdale Plumbing & Heating, a review of the safe system of work for air-conditioning installation led to a practical improvement: equipment to help lift the units. SIUK then delivered a toolbox talk combining a hands-on session with interactive questions.

This work forms part of our retained agreement with Dinsdale. It shows how ongoing safety support can connect the written method, the equipment provided and the people carrying out the installation.

Start with the task: lifting air-conditioning units

An air-conditioning unit needs to be moved and positioned as part of an installation. Its weight is only one consideration. The working height, available space, grip and access can all affect how the task should be carried out.

The review with Dinsdale considered best practice around the installation and the safe system of work. Lifting equipment was introduced as an engineering control: a physical way of reducing the demand placed on the installers.

That distinction matters. A reminder to “lift carefully” leaves the physical task largely unchanged. Suitable lifting equipment can change how the load is handled. HSE’s guidance on avoiding hazardous manual handling explains how redesigning work and using mechanical aids can reduce or eliminate handling risks.

A toolbox talk with equipment, practice and questions

Ricky Nelson delivered the session with the Dinsdale team, focusing on the equipment used to lift air-conditioning units. The practical element brought the discussion back to the task, while interactive questions gave the team an opportunity to engage with the method.

This is where a toolbox talk becomes useful: people can connect the explanation to equipment in front of them, raise questions and discuss how a control fits into their work. The aim is a shared understanding of the method and its limits.

HSE’s manual-handling training guidance recommends training relevant to the work, including mechanical aids, safe systems and practical activity. It also makes clear that training alone cannot ensure safe manual handling.

Our in-person workplace training can be shaped around a team’s tasks and equipment, helping managers connect the risk assessment with day-to-day practice.

PUT THE METHOD INTO PRACTICE

Does your team have the support to follow the plan?

SIUK can help review how a task is organised, develop practical safe systems of work and deliver relevant toolbox talks within an agreed support package.

The lifting aid is part of the system

Introducing equipment also means planning its safe use. For other installation businesses reviewing similar work, the assessment should address the load, equipment capacity, stability, positioning, nearby people and the manufacturer’s instructions.

In Great Britain, lifting operations covered by LOLER must be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out safely. Equipment also needs the applicable inspection, maintenance and thorough-examination arrangements. See HSE’s overview of LOLER.

The level of planning should match the job. HSE’s guidance on planning lifting operations explains how the plan should cover foreseeable risks and responsibilities. A toolbox talk supports that process; attendance alone does not establish competence for every lift.

Dinsdale and Worcester Bosch

Dinsdale Plumbing & Heating serves Teesside and the wider North East. The business is a Worcester Bosch accredited partner and installs Worcester Bosch boilers, as set out on its boiler installation page.

Its air-conditioning service also features Worcester Bosch units under the Chillify name. For customers exploring heating or cooling options, those pages provide a direct route to the Dinsdale team.

Our retained work supports the people behind those installations: reviewing working methods and bringing relevant safety discussions into the workplace.

Four questions for your own installation team

  1. Can the task be improved? Look for opportunities to avoid hazardous handling or reduce it through suitable equipment.
  2. Does the method match the job? Check the actual load, access and working position before starting.
  3. Can the team apply it? Use relevant instruction, practical learning and questions to check understanding.
  4. Who follows up? Make someone responsible for reviewing feedback and keeping the method current.
